Tottenham 2-1 Watford – Premier League Matchweek 24 Review

If one thing is for certain, it’s that Tottenham Hotspur never do it the easy way, as we continued to experience last night at Wembley.

We went into the game coming off a rough week, exiting both domestic cup competitions and basically ending our hopes for silverware this season. But leaving that behind, we needed to move on, and needed nothing less than a win in this game against Watford.

The lineup we put out was arguably our strongest possible team right now, going with Lloris in net, a three back of Toby, Jan and Sanchez at the back, with Aurier and Rose at the wing back roles. Winks and Sissoko in the middle with Eriksen, Son and Llorente up top. I was happy enough with this 11, and believed we definitely had enough to win the game. But remember, its Spurs, and it’s not that simple.

The game started off very slowly, with both teams cancelling out each other. But it was Watford that opened the scoring 38 minutes in, Craig Cathcart bundling the ball in from a corner. Lloris came out and completely missed the ball, and I will say this. Sadly I think his time as Tottenham number one is slowly coming to and end. And I wouldn’t be very confident if we didn’t have a decent upcoming keeper like Paulo Gazzaniga,  I think has served us very well thus far.

Nevertheless, we went into the half down 1-0, work was needed going into the second 45, and we definitely began to play better.

The thing we have to remember is that right now, and for the next few weeks we have Llorente up front, not Harry Kane. So we must work on putting balls in the box, as that is what he does excel at. And I can say that our set pieces and crosses were not up to scratch in this game. So when we eventually started playing a couple of better balls in, Llorente was getting more chances, even though did miss a sitter, definitely reiterating his age and lack of game time. But eventually, when it began to look like we weren’t going to find a way in, we did, as Son blasted the ball in from close range and we were back in it with little over 10 to play. Credit to Watford they defended well all game, but we eventually just overran them.

It was 1-1 going into the last 5 now, and well apparently if there’s one thing we can’t seem to do this season it’s draw. And as apparently has been the case all season, once again we didn’t. Rose put in a great ball over the top into the box and our man up front Llorente finally got his moment, with a fantastic header into the opposite corner.

As was the case at Fulham, we got a late winner, and a needed victory after the week we have had. And with Kane and Dele out, we do have to play different and win ugly in these scenarios. Which is exactly what we did, and I feel we will have to do again against Newcastle at the weekend. Additionally I just want to give credit to not only the players for digging deep the last 20 minutes, but Poch for his substitutions, as they definitely impacted the game in a positive manner.

So moving forward, we can only look forward and not back, look at trying to keep up with and maybe even catch City, whilst keeping  the gap between 4th fairly high. And try our best to play to the strengths of Fernando Llorente, as he has proven he can actually score… well… eventually. Onwards and upwards. COYS.

As always thanks for reading.
